A Two-Year Program Leading to the A.A. Degree - Available at the American Sign Language campus in Indianapolis
American Sign Language is an intensive two-year program designed to prepare students to pursue a baccalaureate degree in American Sign Language interpreting, Deaf education, social work, and other fields within the Deaf community. It will also serve as a foundation in several fields in the area of services for deaf persons: education, rehabilitation, social work, and counseling.
Criminal History/Background Check Policy
The ASL & Deaf Studies Program is located on the campus of the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD). As part of the admissions process, applicants selected for admission to the American Sign Language & Deaf Studies Program will be required to complete a criminal history/background check. The criminal history report will be administered by the Indiana School for the Deaf and results will be used as criterion for admission and continued enrollment in the program. Applicants should be aware that any adverse criminal history report may result in denial of admission or dismissal from the program.
Directions for submitting the criminal history/background report will be provided to applicants that are selected for admission to the program. If ISD’s criminal history/background check comes back “inconclusive,” applicants are responsible for the cost of additional required criminal background checks. Results of criminal history reports are automatically released to the Indiana School for the Deaf, the ASL & Deaf Studies Program, and Vincennes University. The Indiana School for the Deaf and Vincennes University will determine denial of admission or dismissal from the program.
Any applicant or currently enrolled student in the ASL & Deaf Studies Program who has had an arrest or any change in their criminal history since the initial background check was completed must report the information to the Department of ASL & Deaf Studies prior to the next course day. Failure to report this information violates this policy and is grounds for immediate dismissal from the ASL & Deaf Studies Program.
