FIRE 111 - Introduction to Fire & Emergency Services


3 hrs (Sem I)
This course implements the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education model curriculum for Principles of Emergency Services (C0273) and provides an overview to fire protection and emergency services, career opportunities in fire protection and related fields, culture and history of emergency services, fire loss analysis, organization and function of public and private fire protection services, fire departments as part of local government, laws and regulations affecting the fire service, fire service nomenclature, specific fire protection functions, basic fire chemistry and physics, introduction to fire protection systems, introduction to fire strategy and tactics, and life safety initiatives. The concept of National Incident Management System (NIMS) is introduced and addressed to foster safe and effective public safety operations, while further addressing topics and requirements specific to Indiana emergency services workers including but not limited to Hazardous Materials, CPR, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Technical Rescue Awareness. 2 lecture hours, 1 laboratory hour.

Prerequisite(s): Students must be residents of Indiana; accepted to the Fire Science or EMS Programs; or have permission from the Fire Program Department Chair.
