NURP 100 - Fundamentals of Nursing 5 hrs (Sem I) Through the introduction of the Nursing Department Philosophy and Conceptual Framework, students are introduced to the concepts of nursing, client, health, environment, and adaptation. This course is designed to assist beginning practical nursing students in acquiring a foundation of basic nursing theory and developing clinical skills, which will insure provision of safe, effective nursing care. Students are introduced to the client as a holistic being. An overview of basic legal and ethical aspects and the art of caring is presented. The nursing process as the tool to organize and deliver care is introduced. Fundamental skills and knowledge used in basic nursing assessment and care related to infection prevention and control, safety, immobility, ambulation, comfort, sleep, normal nutrition, elimination, oxygenation, circulation, fluid and chemical balance, skin and wound care, medication administration, principles of teaching and learning, and communication are covered. Focus is on helping clients adapt to basic stressors, as well as on health promotion. The laboratory is utilized to assist students in acquiring basic skills. 3 lecture hours, 6 laboratory hours.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Practical Nursing Program. Corequisite(s): NURP 105 and NURP 110 .
