CHEM 315L - Organic Chemistry Laboratory I 2 hrs (Sem I) This laboratory course focuses on the fundamental techniques of organic chemistry. Students learn the techniques of distillation, extraction, recrystallization, and chromatography. They apply instrumentation techniques including Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Gas Chromatography (GC), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to determine the structure of unknown compounds. There is an emphasis on instrument calibration. Students make predictions using a molecular modeling program. Students improve their science writing skills and make an oral presentation to their peers. 6 laboratory hours.
