Workforce Development and Community Services



Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency (ABE/HSE) is a federally funded program pursuant to the Adult Education Act. The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities for out-of-school youth and adults to receive instruction in basic academic skills, practical literacy skills and to complete high school equivalency requirements through the High School Equivalency (HSE) testing program.

ABE also provides ELL (English Language Learning) instructional services.

Vincennes University Adult Basic Education offers individualized instruction in classes at twenty-four sites located throughout a twelve county region of Indiana; Daviess, Martin, Lawrence, Orange, Knox, Gibson, Pike, Dubois, Posey, Vanderburgh, Spencer, and Perry.

Students seek basic education in order to pursue advanced educational goals, enhance occupational advancement and/or to increase their employability.

Off-Campus Continuing Education

Vincennes University offers a various credit and non-credit courses intended to provide educational opportunities to individuals at select locations within the surrounding communities of the Vincennes campus. These courses allow individuals to continue their education, improve their present knowledge and skillsets, acquire new skills, and achieve personal enrichment.

Credit Courses. Traditional face-to-face courses, taught by Vincennes University faculty, are offered in response to area residents’ unique needs and interests at select off-campus locations. Please refer to the Continuing Studies/Distance Education section of this catalog for information regarding credit courses offered via distance education or contact the Distance Education office at 812-888-5900 or 800-880-7961.

Non-credit Courses. Non-credit classes and workshops are offered and developed in response to the unique needs and interests of area residents at select off-campus locations and online. Internet courses covering a wide range of disciplines are offered through partnerships with various online providers.

Non-credit Allied Healthcare training programs in certified nurse aide, qualified medication aide, insulin administration, phlebotomy tech, certified clinical medical assistant, sterile processing tech, healthcare patient access, registration professional, and dental assisting are available in several locations in Indiana. In addition, various non-credit courses are available for professional growth and development including Amatrol trainer based industrial maintenance training, Microsoft Word and Excel, Workplace Spanish, quality control, and leadership. To view the off-campus site locations, non-credit online courses, and class schedules, please visit https://www.vinu.edu/workforce. Senior Scholars Program. Indiana residents sixty years of age or older, retired, not employed full-time, and who have a high school diploma or GED may enroll in for-credit courses with tuition waived on a space available basis. Books, fees, parking permit charges, and other course expenses are the student’s responsibility.

Junior and senior high school students may enroll in courses if permission is granted by their parents and respective principals or guidance counselors. Forms for granting permission are available in the Advisement Center (812-888-4451).

Students wishing to withdraw from the University or drop a credit course should refer to the “Tuition, Fees, and General Expenses ” section of this catalog. No refunds are generally given for non-credit courses after the first class meeting. However, if a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, all tuition and fees are refunded.

Workforce Development Services

Workforce Development Services (WDS) administers the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs on behalf of Vincennes University in two of the twelve regions in Indiana. Employment and training services are provided to adults, economically disadvantaged youth, veterans, and dislocated workers needing assistance to obtain employment leading to self-sufficiency. These services may include assessment, case management, training assistance, supportive services, job search activities, and follow-up.

In Region 7, WDS contracts with the Western Indiana Workforce Development Board to deliver services through a network of offices and access sites located in Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo Counties. In Region 8, WDS contracts with the South Central Regional Workforce Board to deliver workforce development services through offices located in Brown, Daviess, Greene, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange and Owen Counties. Generations

Generations is the designated Area Agency on Aging & Disability serving Daviess, Dubois, Greene, Knox, Martin, and Pike counties. The program serves people over the age of 60, individuals with physical disabilities and their caregivers. Services are designed to provide older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers options for a better quality of life. Generations impacts more than 27,000 people annually through information and services.

Services include: Case Management to assess client service needs, develop care plans and coordinate resources; Nutrition Services to provide nutritious meals and nutrition education through Meals on Wheels home delivery and neighborhood meal sites; Volunteer Opportunities including Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), AngelWorx Volunteer Program and Tax Counseling for the Elderly; Aging and Disability Resource Center to provide information & referral on available resources and options counseling on long-term care options; State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to provide free counseling on Medicare benefits; Caregiver Services to provide services for family caregivers including educational programs, support group meetings and respite care, and advance care planning coaching; Ombudsman to investigate and resolve complaints made by/on behalf of residents of long-term care facilities; Health and Wellness programs to promote lifelong learning, positive aging, and an enhanced quality of life for older adults; and SecureSeniorConnections®, which is an online platform designed to improve older adults’ well-being and reduce loneliness and social isolation. For more information about Generations, call 800-742-9002 or visit our website at GenerationsNetwork.org.

Logistics and Supply Chain

CDL Class A & CDL Class B
The CDL Class A program is a six-week certificate program designed to prepare students to enter the tractor-trailer driver marketplace at an entry-level driving position. The program includes (1) classroom instruction relating to federal regulations governing commercial motor vehicle operation, inspection procedures, proper maintenance practices, and vehicle safety; (2) lab instruction on the backing range learning to master a variety of backing skills; and (3) road driving instruction in which students can expect to drive under a variety of conditions. A CDL Class B program is also available, including classroom, backing, and road-driving instruction for Class B vehicles (ex: straight trucks, buses, dump trucks). The CDL Class A and B programs prepare students to take the State of Indiana CDL Skills Test upon completing the program. The CDL Class A and B programs are offered in Plainfield.

Forklift Essentials (FLE) - (OSHA Compliant - Powered Industrial Truck Operator)
OSHA standards are the basis for this certification. Students will receive classroom instruction on the essential functions and operation of powered forklifts through hands-on training on state-of-the-art equipment. Upon completing both the written and operating exam, students will receive a certificate of completion and powered industrial truck operator (PITO) card, which demonstrates competency to drive the classes of forklifts for which they were trained. The FLE course is offered in a one-day format for experienced drivers and a two-day format for beginners.  The FLE program is offered at the Vincennes University Logistics Training and Education Center (VU LTEC) in Plainfield (317-381-6099).

Warehouse Associate Essentials (WAE)

The WAE course is a one-week program designed to give students the fundamentals of warehousing and distribution through interactive classroom learning and hands-on application of content learned. The content taught within the program will prepare students with a skillset to enter the logistics workforce with a level of knowledge and understanding of supply chain concepts, including but not limited to:

  • Introduction to Supply Chain and Warehousing
  • Warehouse Labor
  • Warehouse Process Flow (receiving, put away and storage, inventory management, picking, packing, and shipping)
  • Transportation
  • Computer Systems

Successful program completion will prepare students to sit for the Vincennes University WDE exam. The WDE course also includes:

  1. an OSHA-compliant Powered Industrial Truck Operator (PITO) license, comprised of classroom and hands-on instruction utilizing several types of forklifts,
  2. a Vincennes University Certificate of Completion after successfully passing the VU WDE exam; and
  3. an online-based OSHA 10-hour General Industry certification.

Team Leadership Essentials (TLE)

The TLE course is designed for current or future team leads within an organization who currently have a leadership role, or have been identified with leadership potential. Through interactive classroom instruction and practical tools provided, the program focuses on equipping Team Leads with the skills necessary to manage and lead high-performing teams. The course is 12 contact hours, which can be taught in two, six-hour sessions or four, three-hour sessions. 

In addition, the TLE program also emphasizes several employability skills (also known as ‘soft skills’), including: communication, critical thinking, delegation, time management, and conflict resolution. Students receive a Vincennes University Certificate of Completion upon conclusion of the TLE program.

Statewide Business and Industry Training Program

Vincennes University’s Business and Industry Training Program’s mission is to make education and training available to all interested companies and individuals throughout the State of Indiana and North America in industrial maintenance, advanced manufacturing, safety, and allied health careers. Courses are designed and tailored to meet the demands of each specific business or industry. VU’s Business and Industry Training provides quality education and training that produces measurable improvement in workers’ job performance. Classes can be as short as a one-day workshop, up to a six-month cooperative training program. Training programs include, but are not limited to, Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) Compliance Training, Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) Compliance Training, Industrial Maintenance, Leadership Development, CNC Programming and Machining, and Allied Health Career Training.

Industrial Maintenance training through Vincennes University offers a variety of courses to meet needs in the industry. Courses are offered in Vincennes, Fort Branch, Lebanon, Plainfield, and Jasper. This program trains incumbent workers in areas including Basic AC/DC Electrical Systems, Electric Motor Controls and Troubleshooting, Variable Frequency Drives, Electronic Sensors, AC Electronic Drives, Mastering PLC’s, Power and Control Electronics, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Troubleshooting, Mechanical Drives Training, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, and Mechatronics. 

Vincennes University’s Gibson County Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics in Fort Branch helps students and workers pursue careers through specific training programs. Current workers will benefit through programs designed to expand their skills and abilities to remain competitive in the latest technologies. 

The 57,342 square-foot VU Gibson Center is designed for safety and advanced manufacturing training. Training courses are taught by licensed, certified faculty and staff who bring significant experience within the industry and as instructors.

Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) Compliance courses are located at the Gibson County Center in Fort Branch. Courses include Surface and Underground New Miner, Surface and Underground Annual Refresher, and 100 Hour Electrical Training.
