PHIL 213 - Logic and Critical Thinking 3 hrs (Sem II) This course will teach students how to think logically and critically, to make and evaluate arguments, to correctly draw inferences, to support beliefs with good reasons, to avoid various formal and informal fallacies, and to recognize other common impediments to rational thinking, such as confirmation bias, groupthink, and inappropriate appeal to authority. Skills related to deductive and inductive reasoning, tests for validity, Venn diagrams, truth tables, the scientific method, and techniques for academic research and debate will also be studied. Offered in odd-numbered years. 3 class hours.
Prerequisite(s): Students must qualify for ENGL 010 or ENGL 079 .
